Using a throwaway for obvious reasons.
I (29M) had been dating my girlfriend (35F) for about eight months. Our relationship had its ups and downs, mostly due to her struggles with mental health, but overall, things were good.
Recently, she was in the running for a major promotion at work. She was incredibly stressed about it until someone let it slip that she was going to get it. I’d never seen her so happy—it was amazing to see.
The day she expected the official offer, we planned to meet our friends at our favorite bar after work to celebrate. But when I met her outside the bar, I could tell immediately that something was wrong. She told me she didn’t get the promotion—it went to another woman, someone she absolutely despises. She was devastated. I suggested we just go home, but she insisted on staying out, saying she needed to get drunk.
And she did.
At first, she barely spoke, just drank. Our friends quickly noticed something was off. Eventually, she and I started arguing—over something as small as the wings we ordered. She complained that I didn’t listen to her, didn’t care about what she wanted, and so on. At some point, I snapped and told her she was drunk, acting like an ass, and that she needed to go home.
That’s when she got furious and, in front of all five of our friends, blurted out my fetish to everyone.
I won’t go into too much detail, but I have a fart fetish, and she made fun of me for it in front of the entire group. Yeah, whatever—some people have weirder kinks—but it was deeply embarrassing. I’m already insecure about it, and now all of our friends know. How am I supposed to hang out with them again after this?
The next morning, I broke up with her. She cried, begged me to reconsider, and said she didn’t remember anything from the night before. It was tough, but I stood my ground.
Now, I’m questioning myself. Did I overreact? Was breaking up with her unfair, considering she was having an awful day and doesn’t even remember what happened?
AITAH?
